Community awarenessWe seek to engage with the many and varied communities and organisations throughout the Clyde catchment. Over the years we have spoken with a number of community organisations, such as community councils, angling associations and local clean-up groups. We aim to provide useful information and background to our work wherever possible and we view this as an essential part of the success of the River Clyde Fishery Management Plan. Increased awareness and understanding of river ecology is vital to the stewardship of the freshwater resource. We now hope to build on this contact and support community groups to undertake prioritised physical improvements (including river restoration measures) across the Clyde sub-catchments.

Recent community group presentations

Cartblanche, White Cart Water sub-catchment

Cartblanche logoIn November, our Education Liaison Officer met with the extremely active members of Cartblanche, in the White Cart Water sub-catchment. Cartblanche was established in 1999 to “promote and revitalise” the White Cart via a range of practical, educational, informational and access-related measures. Over the course of the evening, the CRF presented information about the current ecological knowledge of the White Cart Water and discussed potential initiatives to further the local objectives of the group.

Milngavie in Bloom, River Kelvin sub-catchment

Milngavie in Bloom logo and websiteIn September 2011, our Catchment Manager Dr Willie Yeomans attended the annual general meeting of Milngavie in Bloom, a group dedicated to bringing colour to Milngavie via environmental improvements and local action. They are concerned about the health and condition of the Allander Water which flows through the centre of Milngavie.

This community-focussed outreach work is an increasingly important area of our work. Via the BTCV Scotland Natural Communities programme, our Kelvin Catchment Officer has scoped the need for improved catchment-based communication to support river-based environmental improvements in the River Kelvin catchment. More information on this initiative will follow.
