Flying Fish Project Outline
Flying Fish consists of a field trip to the river in the morning and a follow-up session back in school after lunch.
1) Morning field trip – Pupils will visit their local burn where they will be introduced to some of the methods biologists use to assess river health. These include:
- A demonstration of a fish survey using electrofishing
- Fish identification
- Kick sampling for collection of freshwater invertebrates
- Invasive non-native species identification
2) Afternoon session – Pupils will sort and identify their invertebrates in a pop-up laboratory and complete a number of activities including:
- Invertebrate scoring for water quality assessment
- In-catchment pollution assessment
- Crafty caddisfly tying
- Production of a River Health poster
