Flying Fish Project Outline  

Flying Fish consists of a field trip to the river in the morning and a follow-up session back in school after lunch.

1) Morning field trip Pupils will visit their local burn where they will be introduced to some of the methods biologists use to assess river health.  These include:

  • A demonstration of a fish survey using electrofishing
  • Fish identification
  • Kick sampling for collection of freshwater invertebrates
  • Invasive non-native species identification

2) Afternoon session – Pupils will sort and identify their invertebrates in a pop-up laboratory and complete a number of activities including:

  • Invertebrate scoring for water quality assessment
  • In-catchment pollution assessment
  • Crafty caddisfly tying
  • Production of a River Health poster
